Warning Signs of Periodontal Disease

A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report revealed that 47.2 percent of adults have some form of periodontal disease–over half of the american population.  That is a staggering statistic and prompts the question, “why?” Quite possibly, part of the problem is that people don’t recognize the warning signs that tell them that they are at risk for periodontal disease, or that they have the beginning stages of it. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to dental health. Periodontal diseases are mainly the results of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out. Learn about the warning signs of periodontal disease so you can avoid the problems it can create.

What is Periodontal Disease?

So what is periodontal disease? If we break the word down, “Peri” means around, and “odontal” refers to teeth. Periodontal diseases are infections of the structures around the teeth. These include the gums, the cementum that covers the root, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. Gingivitis is seen as infection of the gums and is a sign of one of earliest stage of periodontal disease. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the supporting tissues are involved.

Warning Signs of Periodontal Disease

One of the best ways to combat periodontal disease is with prevention.  Knowing what warning signs to look for can help you safeguard your oral health and the health of your body. When you brush your teeth each day, look for these symptoms.  If you find that you are suffering from any one of these symptoms, call Dr. Bockrath at Mountain Aire Dentistry and make an appointment to stop gum disease in its tracks before it progresses to a more serious stage. These are the things to check for:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures

Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease

Certain risk factors can make you more susceptible to periodontal disease. Factors such as diabetes, pregnancy, or using tobacco products. You should also avoid cigarettes and starchy/sugary foods as these have been associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease.

Periodontal Disease is Stealthy

Gum disease can progress painlessly, producing few of the obvious warning signs, even in the later stages of the disease. This is one of the reasons there are so many people suffering from this disease right now.  Unlike a toothache, with gum disease you don’t have pain triggering you into action.  This is why it is so important to schedule and keep your regular 6-month check-ups with Dr. Bockrath and to perform these daily check-ups on yourself for warning signs.  Remember, the key to combating periodontal disease is in prevention.

Treatment Options for Periodontal Disease

The treatment you will receive for your periodontal disease depends on how advanced your condition is. Once Dr. Bockrath has been able to ascertain the level of gum disease in your mouth, he will plan out a course of treatment with you. Some of the available treatment options include:

  • Removal of plaque and calculus through root planing and scaling
  • Prescription mouthwash
  • Medication
  • Surgery in order to stop or minimize the progression

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects your gums. If the condition is left untreated and allowed to progress, periodontal disease can easily lead to tooth loss. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults.

Keeping Periodontal Disease Away

Proper oral hygiene practices are the key to fighting periodontal disease.  Commit to doing your part to maintain the health of your gums. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth daily to remove plaque before it becomes tartar. Make and keep your regular 6-month check-ups.  Use a mouthwash. Incorporate an American Dental Association approved, tartar control toothpaste. Don’t delay. Procrastinating treatment when you know there is a problem will just accelerate your condition.  It doesn’t take long for gingivitis to develop into something more serious.  You will have your smile forever, so take the time necessary now to keep it your best smile long into the future.
