What to Expect from Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested services offered by our Broomfield, Colorado, office and one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your smile.  Our Mountain Aire Dentistry whitening team provides a variety of options to meet your specific needs.  We are committed to helping you reach your smile goals by discussing with you ways that we can improve the brightness of your smile in our office and how you can continue to keep that bright smile after you leave.  Your oral hygiene, medications or nutritional habits could be affecting the whiteness of your teeth. A consultation with one of our trained teeth whitening experts can help you restore your beautiful smile in as little as one visit.

Choosing a Teeth Whitening Option for You

One of the first things you will want to do is choose which method of teeth whitening you would like to use.  At Mountain Aire Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening services in our office as well as an at-home system that provides whitening power for a slightly longer period of time. Each option offers a unique set of benefits. You can also use in-office whitening treatments and at-home treatments in conjunction for the maximum whitening effect. Not sure which option to use? Dr. Bockrath can help you weigh the pros and cons of each treatment and help you come to a decision during your Mountain Aire Dentistry teeth whitening evaluation.

Teeth Whitening Evaluation

Before you are prescribed treatment, your teeth will be given a prophylactic cleaning to remove plaque or material that has collected on the surface or between your teeth. Following this cleaning, a dental exam will be performed to look for any tooth decay, cracks, or gum disease that could cause problems during the teeth whitening procedure.  (Bleaches can cause irritations if these conditions are present.)  To help assess the current shade of your teeth and the desired shade, photos may be taken of your teeth to aid in the whitening process.

In-office teeth whiteningIn-Office Whitening

Professional in-office teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure in the world today and is used to treat tooth discolorations that result from aging, consumption of certain foods–notably, coffee, tobacco red wine, sodas, and dark-colored vegetables and fruits.

Unlike at-home whitening systems that incorporate low-dose bleaching agents, your in-office whitening will take place under carefully monitored conditions with Dr. Bockrath who will oversee your treatment to ensure that the amount of bleaching gel you are given is safe, controlled and doesn’t cause you pain.  Thicker peroxide gels and the use of desensitizers, such as potassium nitrate and fluoride, help prevent gum and tooth sensitivity during the teeth whitening procedure.  One of the methods used by Mountain Aire Dentistry is a gentle hydrogen-peroxide, gel-activated solution that is particularly effective for those with sensitive gums.

One of the biggest advantages to our in-office whitening procedure is you will be able to notice a difference in your smile immediately after your treatment in our office.  The discoloration on your teeth will be removed in just two hours.

At-home teeth whiteningAt-Home Whitening Kit

There are several advantages to at-home whitening: 1) It is less expensive than in-office whitening; 2) in-office bleaching is not a permanent solution; you will need to repeat whitening treatment/maintenance when the whitening begins to fade; and 3) It is convenient and portable. The lower-percentage bleach in your at-home kit allows you to treat the teeth for longer periods of time providing you the ability to whiten your smile whenever you feel like it needs it.

During an office visit, we will make you a comfortable, custom-fitted tray that you can use with a prescription-grade gel to help remove yellowing. These custom-fit trays ensure that the bleach stays in contact with the teeth for maximum whitening and help prevent the bleach from irritating the gums. Custom-trays also help prevent saliva from diluting the strength of the bleaching agent.  The whitening trays are worn 30-60 minutes up to twice a day.  Kits provide enough gel for one, two-week treatment per year, plus one-or two-day touch-ups every four to six months.  If you choose to use an at-home whitening kit, use them correctly so you don’t harm your tooth enamel or irritate your gum tissue. Over-bleaching can produce a blueish hue or chalky appearance to the teeth.

How to Retain Your White Smile

There are ways that you can proactively help your teeth whitening results last longer.  Strive to practice and develop good dental hygiene habits, avoid drinks or foods with dark pigments. The best time to begin at-home teeth whitening is soon after your teeth have undergone a deep cleaning so no particles on your teeth interfere with the bleaching process.  Continue to maintain your beautiful, white smile by brushing and flossing your teeth just prior to an at-home whitening application to help remove debris.  Avoid consuming food or beverages (excluding water) for a couple of hours after teeth whitening.
