The Transforming Power of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested services offered by our Broomfield, Colorado, office. Our Mountain Aire Dentistry whitening team provides a variety of options to meet your specific needs. We are committed to helping you reach your smile goals by discussing with you ways that we can improve the brightness of your smile in our office and how you can continue to keep that bright smile after you leave.  Your oral hygiene, medications or nutritional habits could be affecting the whiteness of your teeth. A consultation with one of our trained whitening experts can help you restore your beautiful smile in as little as one visit.

The Popularity of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic dentistry because it is fast, painless, inexpensive and effective.  If you are looking for a way to improve your smile TODAY, we can help you at Mountain Aire Dentistry with a teeth whitening session.  After a consultation with Dr. Bockrath, we can determine which teeth whitening service will be the most beneficial for you. There are both in-office and at-home treatments available to you. You may even chose that you want to have a combination of both.

Teeth Whitening Consultation

Before you begin the process of teeth whitening, your teeth need to be thoroughly examined and cleaned to ensure that they are ready for whitening treatment. Few things can delay your treatment, but if you have severe tooth decay, cracks, or gum disease, your whitening may have to be delayed until we address these issues.  A prophylactic cleaning will be done to thoroughly remove plaque or material that has collected on the surface or between your teeth. After this cleaning, a comprehensive dental exam will be performed to assess for other issues.  (Bleaches can cause irritations if these conditions are present.)

The other part of the consultation process is determining the shade you want to whiten your teeth to.  Photos are sometimes taken to help assist in determining which shade will look most natural so you can be happy with your results.

What Causes Teeth to Discolor?

One of the most common questions that we are asked is what causes teeth to discolor in the first place? This question is an important one so patients can take a proactive role in keeping their smiles as white as possible.  Some common causes of teeth discoloration include:

  • Aging: Dentin naturally yellows over time. The enamel that covers the teeth gets thinner with age, which allows the dentin to show through.
  • Consuming teeth-dying foods: coffee, tobacco red wine, sodas, and dark-colored vegetables and fruits.
  • Smoking/tobacco use: tobacco substances can stain your teeth and cause premature yellowing.
  • Inner tooth dentin structure changes: from consuming too much fluoride, tetracycline antibiotics, pulp trauma.

Your Teeth Whitening Options

We offer you two different methods for teeth whitening that you can choose from our a combination of the two:

In-Office Whitening

In-office whitening is done under the supervision of our Mountain Aire Dentistry team.  If at any time your teeth are feeling uncomfortable during the whitening process you can let us know and we can make adjustments during your treatment.  Dr. Bockrath will ensure that the amount of bleaching gel you are given is safe, controlled and painless.  Thicker peroxide gels and the use of desensitizers, such as potassium nitrate and fluoride, help prevent gum and tooth sensitivity during the teeth whitening procedure.  One of the methods used by Mountain Aire Dentistry is a gentle hydrogen-peroxide, gel-activated solution that is particularly effective for those with sensitive gums.

One of the biggest advantages to our in-office whitening procedure is you will be able to notice a difference in your smile immediately after your treatment in our office. The discoloration on your teeth will be removed in just two hours.

At-Home Whitening Kit

Patients that choose at-home whitening treatments can benefit from the convenience that at-home treatments provide.  At-home whitening kits allow you to maintain your white teeth when the brightness begins to fade.  At-home kits contain a lower-percentage of bleach so you can treat your teeth for longer periods of time. This allows you to whiten your smile whenever you feel like your smile needs it.  Your at-home whitening kit includes custom-made trays that fit your teeth and smile exactly.  Take your whitening kit wherever you go so you have access to it when you need it.  It is important to follow the instructions of Dr. Bockrath so that you don’t overdue it.  If you expose your teeth for too long to the bleaching agents, your teeth could sustain damage.

Help Your Results Last Longer

Teeth whitening results can last longer when you take the following simple steps. First and foremost,  strive to practice and develop good dental hygiene habits, and avoid drinks or foods with dark pigments.  Avoid consuming food or beverages (excluding water) for a couple of hours after teeth whitening.  Use a straw when you can to keep stain-causing dyes from robbing you of your white smile.  If you currently smoke or use tobacco, try and quit! These substances can sabotage your efforts at keeping your smile bright.  Incorporate whitening toothpastes to help you further with your goals.
