Not All Teeth Whitening Is the Same

Teeth whitening brings your smile to the forefront–where it belongs! A smile can convey more than just a nice set of teeth. Studies show that smiling reveals your level of happiness, sociability and even success. Those who smile more often, and are more confident about their smiles, tend to be more successful in work, at school and even in their home life. White teeth are an indication of good health and the absence of unhealthy or poor habits. A study by Carrington College revealed that whiter smiles increased a person’s attractiveness by 20% and made them appear 5 years younger on average. It also made people appear more employable. However, not all teeth whitening is the same. Many store-bought kits have very little whitening power compared to what you can receive from a professional dentist. Many whitening toothpastes also claim to “whiten” teeth, when really they are only helping to remove stains. Our Mountain Aire Dentistry team is skilled at making customized whitening trays to fit your mouth and give you a dazzling smile in just days that will actually stay. Teeth whitening is one of the easiest and affordable ways to get a better smile. Everyone deserves a whiter smile!

All About Teeth Whitening

Maybe you have done teeth whitening before or maybe this is your first time. Over the years, habits such as drinking coffee or tea or not exercising good oral hygiene, can cause the whiteness of the teeth to dull. Your teeth perform for you everyday and thus require that you perform for them with good oral hygiene efforts. Tooth stains and tooth enamel deterioration give the teeth a dull gray or yellow appearance. Teeth whitening treatment can help solve these issues.

Your Everyday Whitening Products

You see whitening products at every grocery store or pharmacy you go to. Many toothpastes even tout their “whitening” power, but how effective are these products? Studies have found that many whitening toothpastes remove stains by brushing, and that is usually how these toothpastes “whiten”, instead of actually changing the color of your teeth. Other whitening products that you can buy over-the-counter provide whitening gels and trays. These trays are a one-size-fits-all kind of deal, no matter the person. A one-size kind of tray can cause teeth to not all whiten the same or leave whitening spots on some teeth. Some products will cause irritation to your gums if the tray gel or strip gel comes in contact with your gums (which often happens with a one-size-fits-all approach). A trial-and-error approach to teeth whitening from over-the-counter treatments introduce a level of risk that we encourage our patients to avoid.

What Do the Experts Say?

The American Dental Association (ADA) states that whitening is “any process that will make teeth appear whiter,” and that over-the-counter products do this by either bleaching the tooth or removing surface stains. Their research into toothpastes found that they only removed surface stains to “whiten” teeth instead of actually changing the natural tooth color. Products with peroxide-containing bleaching agents can cause a lot of tooth sensitivity based on how much these agents are present in the treatment and how often they are used. The ADA does however, put their “Seal of Acceptance” on some products that will give you some kind of whitening benefit—it just won’t be as effective as the benefits from a professional dental whitening treatment. The ADA also cautions those seeking tooth-whitening procedures to first consult with their dentist before using a bleaching product so as to avoid problems that could arise with sensitivity, irritation, and effects to crowns, fillings and other restorative tooth appliances.

Our Whitening System

The most beneficial part of getting an in-office teeth whitening treatment is that you can control how long it takes to get your teeth to the level of whiteness you desire. Have a special event coming up? Dr. Bockrath can administer a full whitening treatment in-office before a special occasion, making this your fastest and most effective option when you are in a pinch for time. Other treatments may take weeks to reach their maximum effect, and you may not have the whiteness you expected in the end.

We also provide a gentler lightening effect that you can do on your own time with our at-home treatment kit. We will meet with you to make a custom-fit tray perfect for your mouth so that it fits snug and whitens your teeth evenly. We will also provide a prescription-grade gel (not something you can just go get at the store) that will whiten your teeth at lightning speed. The special benefit of the at-home treatment kit is that you can keep it with you for teeth whitening over the years. Plus, you’ll see results with the first treatment!

The Confidence of a Whiter Smile

Procter & Gamble reported on a study that showed whiter teeth “can lead to greater success in work and love”.  Participants felt more confident and were perceived as more attractive with whiter teeth.  Teeth whitening is more important than you might think and the immediate benefits impression a clean smile offers those you meet are far-reaching.
