How To Treat Erosive Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition which can affect the skin and the inner lining of the mouth. The cause for this condition is unknown, though it is believed that it could be a result of the immune system attacking the body. Erosive lichen planus is one type of this condition that occurs in the mouth, creating painful red sores or erosions. Lichen planus can last several years and has no cure, but its symptoms can be managed.

Speak with your dentist or physician if you believe you have developed lichen planus. They will recommend the best treatment plan possible, which may include options such as:

  • Corticosteroids: This powerful, anti-inflammatory drug is the most common treatment for erosive lichen planus. It can be taken orally or injected, but normally it is applied topically.
  • Immune Response Medication: If the lichen planus is severe or has appeared on other parts of the body, this medication may be a solution by suppressing and modifying the responses of the body’s immune system.
  • Treating Triggers: For some individuals, certain triggers may be related to the inflammation of lichen planus. Treating triggers like allergies, stress, medication, or hepatitis infection may be the best option for managing lichen planus symptoms.

Along with a treatment plan, there are other steps you should take to avoid irritating the sores of lichen planus such as:

  • Avoiding foods and drinks which are alcoholic, spicy, acidic, or salty.
  • Brushing and flossing daily to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Avoiding smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • Having a dentist adjust dentures which do not fit well.
  • Avoiding bad habits like chewing on your cheeks or lips.
