At Mountain Aire Dentistry, we emphasize the importance of a comprehensive oral care routine, and flossing plays a crucial role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. While brushing is essential, it’s not enough on its own. Let’s explore what flossing is, why it’s important, how to do it properly, how often you should floss your teeth, and how it fits into your overall dental care routine.

What Is Flossing?

Flossing involves using a thin piece of dental string, known as dental floss, to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gum line. This process helps clean areas that a toothbrush cannot reach, ensuring a more thorough cleaning.

Why Is Flossing Important?

Flossing is vital for several reasons:

  1. Prevents Gum Disease: Flossing removes plaque that can harden into tartar if not addressed. This can lead to gum inflammation and periodontal disease.
  2. Reduces Cavities: By cleaning between your teeth, flossing helps prevent cavities from forming in those hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Promotes Fresh Breath: Regular flossing removes food particles and bacteria that contribute to bad breath.
  4. Enhances Overall Health: Good oral hygiene, including flossing, has been linked to a lower risk of various health issues, such as heart disease and diabetes.

How to Floss Properly

To get the most out of your flossing routine, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the Right Floss: There are various types of dental floss available, including waxed, unwaxed, and flavored options. Choose one that feels comfortable for you.
  2. Use Enough Floss: Break off about 18 inches of floss. This allows you to use a clean section for each tooth.
  3. Grip the Floss: Wind the ends of the floss around your middle fingers, leaving about 1-2 inches between them for gripping.
  4. Gently Insert: Use your index fingers to guide the floss between your teeth. Be gentle to avoid damaging your gums.
  5. C-Shaped Motion: Curve the floss around each tooth in a C-shape and slide it gently beneath the gum line. Move the floss up and down to remove plaque and debris.
  6. Repeat: Use a clean section of floss for each tooth, and don’t forget to floss the back of your last molars.

How Often Should You Floss?

For optimal oral health, it’s recommended to floss at least once a day. Many people find it easiest to floss in the evening before brushing their teeth, but you can choose a time that works best for you.

Flossing as Part of a Full Routine

Flossing is just one component of a complete oral hygiene routine. Here’s how it fits in:

  1. Brush Twice Daily: Use fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes, focusing on all surfaces of your teeth.
  2. Floss Daily: Incorporate flossing into your routine to ensure your mouth is thoroughly cleaned.
  3. Rinse with Mouthwash: After brushing and flossing, consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to further reduce plaque and freshen your breath.
  4. Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist every six months for professional cleanings and examinations to catch any potential issues early.
