Summer is a great time to get a beautiful smile to take with you on vacation, to the pool and when spending time with friends. Teeth can take a hard hit from the foods we eat, poor dental hygiene and the aging process, but they don’t have to stay that way. Teeth whitening treatments can sometimes take weeks to start noticing a difference, but with Zoom teeth whitening your teeth can be up to 8 shades whiter after one treatment. Find out how Zoom teeth whitening works and what you can expect during your first treatment with this guide!
How Teeth Become Discolored
During the summer, we are busy going to community events, family parties and work meetings. In preparation, we dress nice, fix our hair and try to present the best version of ourselves. However, our discolored or stained teeth can take a hit at our appearance and self-confidence. Teeth become discolored for a variety of reasons. To begin, extrinsic discoloration occurs as the outer layer of our teeth, called enamel, becomes stained. This is caused by smoking, coffee, wine and soda, which not only stains our teeth but leaves us susceptible to tooth decay. Intrinsic discoloration, on the other hand, develops as the inner structure of the tooth, called dentin, darkens. Although less common, intrinsic discoloration is known to be caused by excessive fluoride consumption during childhood, pregnant women using tetracycline antibiotics during the second half of their pregnancies and those same antibiotics ingested by children under 8 years of age. Trauma to teeth can also be a cause of intrinsic discoloration, as a tooth reacts to an injury by creating more dentin, which darkens the tooth. But stained teeth develop from other factors, as well, such as poor dental hygiene, illness, medication use and the natural aging process. Whatever the cause of your discolored teeth, there are ways to brighten your teeth and give you your confidence back.
What To Expect With Teeth Whitening
One of the most popular ways to fix teeth discoloration is through teeth whitening treatments. Zoom teeth whitening treatments are especially sought after as they take only one hour to complete in-office and you will leave after one office visit with teeth that are multiple shades lighter than you walked in with. The dentist will first clean your teeth so that their surface will be free of leftover food particles, then your lips and gums will be covered to prevent being exposed to the tooth whitening mixture. A hydrogen peroxide gel will then be applied to your teeth and left to sit for 15 minutes before Zoom LED lights are shined on them to help the hydrogen peroxide dissolve stains and discoloration on your teeth. This process will be repeated two more times for best results. In total there are 3, 15-minute treatments that will leave your teeth shining. You’ll also be given instructions on how to take care of your new smile at home, and given a touch up kit to keep your smile white.
At-Home Teeth Whitening Options
Some patients prefer to get a whiter smile in the comfort of their own homes, and there are more options than ever for those who want to do so. Stain-removing toothpastes are a great way to start your journey towards a brighter smile. All toothpastes contain abrasives that scrub the teeth while brushing, but the American Dental Association has created a seal of acceptance for stain-removing toothpastes that go above and beyond normal tooth scrubbing and provide more polishing agents. However, toothpaste can only scrub off the stains that are on your teeth; they cannot change the actual color of your teeth like teeth whitening treatments can. You can also be fitted for custom-made teeth whitening trays by your dentist to use at home. You simply place the bleaching agent on the tray and pop it in your mouth for an allotted time. At-home bleaching treatments are convenient for busy patients but they can take a few weeks before any noticeable difference takes effect. Over-the-counter bleaching kits and whitening strips are also available at local grocery stores, but they normally don’t contain the same concentration of bleaching agent that dental offices provide, so they can be ineffective.
