Are Dental Veneers for Me?

When you look in the mirror at your smile, what do you see? Are you happy with the appearance of your teeth? At Mountain Aire Dentistry we want you to be happy and confident with one of your greatest features. Do you have chipped, broken, or stained teeth? Do you have teeth that are crooked or misshapen? If so, you may be a good candidate for a cosmetic procedure that can makeover your smile in just a few visits.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin porcelain covers that are put on top of your natural teeth to change the shape, size and color of your teeth.   Advances in the field of dentistry provide Dr. Bockrath the capability to make your veneers look exactly like the neighboring tooth enamel and dramatically improve your smile in just a few office visits.  Veneers owe their long-lasting and natural-looking qualities to the high-quality porcelain with which they are made.   Now you can have that beautiful, custom smile that you dream of. Visit with Dr. Bockrath and our friendly Mountain Aire Dentistry team to learn if dental veneers are an option for you.  Communication with Dr. Bockrath about what you would like to see improved in your smile is critical for a successful result.

How Are Dental Veneers Placed?

Dr. Bockrath wants your dental veneers to look as natural as they can and for you to be happy with the result.  To give you these results, the process involved with placing veneers takes about three dental visits. During your first visit, we will first determine if you are a candidate for this cosmetic dentistry procedure. There are some factors that can eliminate veneers as a treatment option for your needs, but we can discuss all options that are available for you.  On your second visit, a small amount of enamel (the outer coating of your teeth) will be removed to make room for the veneer. Typically, only one-half millimeter is removed.  Sometimes this procedure requires local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.  Again, to gain that natural-looking result, we have to remove enough enamel so that the tooth thickness/shape looks natural once the veneer is placed.  After the enamel is trimmed down, an impression is then taken of your teeth and sent to a dental lab where the veneers are custom made to fit your mouth. At the third visit, we attach the dental veneers to your teeth with special adhesive material.  (Veneers are applied to the part of the tooth that is visible when talking or smiling. ) Once your veneers are placed, you are done and able to enjoy your new, brilliant smile!

What Cases Can Veneers Help?

There are more situations that dental veneers can solve than not solve.  They, truly, are a great technological advancement in the field of dentistry that you can take advantage of.  Dental veneers are used to solve a number of different challenges that our patients face such as:

  • Teeth gaps. Dental veneers can be constructed to fill irregular teeth gaps in your smile. Patients love this ability of dental veneers since it can give them the smile they have always wanted without the need for braces.
  • Misshapen teeth.  Patients that have chipped, broken, or worn down teeth are ideal candidates for dental veneers.
  • Crooked teeth.  Using a masking technique, dental veneers can be adhered to hide teeth that are crooked or uneven.  The result is a stunning set of teeth that look perfectly shaped and aligned with the rest of the teeth.
  • Discolored teeth. The technology behind dental veneers covers discolored teeth so that each tooth blends with the next one and no one tooth stands out in any way. Veneers are perfect for teeth that don’t respond to whitening.  They cover stains that other cosmetic treatments aren’t able to.  Dr. Bockrath will help you choose a shade of veneer that will give you a beautiful, natural-looking, white smile.

Dental Veneers vs. Crowns

Dental veneers can give you a natural, beautifully-balanced smile, but are not not an option for all dental conditions. During your initial consultation with Dr. Bockrath, he will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure.  Teeth that have been weakened by decay, fractures, or large fillings will not be able to support dental veneers.  In this case, you may need crowns instead. Crowns are also necessary if you have missing teeth. The advantage of dental veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth material is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable.  People who clench their jaws and grind their teeth are also poor candidates for veneers since this can cause veneers to crack or chip.  Unlike other cosmetic options, porcelain veneers won’t be stained by cigarette smoke, coffee, tea, and red wine.
